Program: Karl Mondon - Behind the Lens, 40 Years a Newspaper Photographer (7:30 PM PST)
Our first program night in more than a year will be on Monday Feb 26 at 7:30pm via zoom only (not in person)
Behind the Lens, 40 Years a Newspaper Photographer
Karl Mondon is a very distinguished photojournalism photographer working for the Bay Area Newsgroup including the Mercury News. He has been responsible for some of the finest photography in the Then and Now series and his extensive credits include, Chicago From The Air Then and Now, LA From the Air Then and Now, East Bay Then and Now, Seattle Then and Now, Las Vegas Then and Now and San Francisco Then and Now (twice!)
I have asked him to discuss photojournalism in general and specifically talk about how he chooses his subjects, how he frames them for best impact, and how he deals with laws regarding signed releases from subjects.
If you have ever entered a PJ photo or want to in the future, you should watch this. PJ clearly overlaps travel photography.
You must register in advance in order to receive the zoom login for this program. You cannot view the program without registering. Please register soon as I will invite other clubs to join us. click the link below:

Projected Image Entry Deadline is 10 AM
Competition: Color, Monochrome, Photojournalism, Creative (7:30 PM PST)
Judge: Becky Jaffe
Biography:
A photographer and educator, Becky Jaffe exhibits her photography in over forty galleries and museums nationwide, curates multimedia exhibits in community art centers and greenhouses, and teaches Art of Seeing courses for fine art photographers. Her photographs have been published in LensWork, SHOTS Magazine, the San Francisco Chronicle, and Bay Nature Magazine. She was the 2019 Artist-in-Residence at the UC Botanical Garden, where she teaches photography workshops that cross-pollinate the arts and sciences, using an artistic lens to study ethnobotany, ecology, and evolutionary biology. She teaches photography internationally as a lecturer for Cal Discoveries Travel in countries such as Japan, Australia, Panama, and Egypt. She is a botanical evangelist, an apostle of photons, and a brazen peddler of ontological awe.
Philosophy:
Judging philosophy: I know I will see gorgeous and moving photography when I attend a camera club meeting. I am less interested in ranking and sorting this beauty than I am in leveraging the competition as a platform for learning from each other’s gifts and talents, so that we each might come away from the evening with additional tools in our artistic toolbox, a dose of collective inspiration, and a visceral yearning to create ever more exquisite art. I take a multidisciplinary approach to judging images, analyzing both form and content, naming aesthetic techniques and wrangling with the tacit emotions and multiple meanings of each image. If you would like to pander to the judge, show me images that transform light and shadow into raw wonder.

Deadline for Entering Projected Images for April Club Competition (9:59 AM PDT)
Projected Image Entry Deadline is 10 AM
Competition: Color, Monochrome, Nature , Travel (Projected Only), Creative (Prints Only) (7:30 PM PDT)
Judge: Bruce Finocchio
Biography:
I look for the sacredness of life and the beauty that resides within. Through my empathic connection and awareness, my photography seeks to capture the wonder and mystery of life. Each moment is unique and special. Embodying more than just the physical, it’s a window into the spirit world.
Out of this vision brings forth a love for all living creatures. Leaving one with a sense of harmony and oneness and feelings of inner calm and peace.
Knowing within my heart that this captured beauty can stir the soul, instilling a belief that the web of life can be preserved, and wild animals and wild places can be protected for posterity.
It all began because my Dad was a deer hunter, and as his son, I was expected to follow in his footsteps. I killed many birds, ground squirrels, and rabbits as a young boy. Then, in my teens, I took up deer hunting with my first big rifle. That was short-lived. After watching the light of life go out of a black-tailed buck’s eyes, I choose to preserve the lives of animals. This was a seminal moment in becoming the nature photographer I am today.
My father’s Ramrod Ranch, now mine, in the upper reaches of the Arroyo Seco Valley, Greenfield, California, has become my beloved and sacred place, where I learned to love wildlife, especially birds. I became fascinated with their beautiful sounds, varied and gorgeous coloring, and interesting bird behaviors.
Photographing birds in such close proximity and other animals, I have learned to love wildlife and the natural world and have cultivated a passionate desire to create nature images alive with beauty. Honing my photographic talents, and developing my artistic style, allows me to capture the majesty and sacredness of life.
Philosophy:
I feel judging should be a learning experience—to share ideas, explore feelings and techniques and have fun! Above all, to improve our creativity and photographic artistry.
